Concealer vs. Foundation

We get asked this question a lot, so we thought we’d explain the differences.

Foundation

Foundation is named appropriately as it is the foundation for your makeup application. It is meant to be spread evenly over the entire face and even out your complexion taking away discolorations. It comes in many forms and coverages from sheer liquids to heavier creams. Original foundations used to be called pancake makeup, a pressed powder version that needed water to make it spreadable. Hence how the term cake face came about since the finish was very dry and pasty looking.

Foundation formulas have come a long way since the original powder based ones.  There are now very sheer foundations that have added SPF, up to super full coverage with high pigment concentrations.

Concealer

Concealers are a super concentrated form of foundation and meant to be applied on just the areas of your face that need extra coverage. Concealer can be used alone or along with foundation for the most flawless complexion. One of the areas that need extra coverage include undereye circles so some concealers have added ingredients to work on the delicate skin around the eye area.  Some include ingredients that help with blemish control as well.

Our AMAZINGCONCEALER is the reason we decided to start a company. Working as a professional makeup artist, there were not many concealers available. The concealers at the time that we had to choose from were lacking in shade range (usually only 2-3 options: Light, Medium or Dark) and most did not have enough pigment to cover anything let alone last all day. The concealers that did have a higher pigment concentration (pigment = opaqueness) ended up looking super dry and cakey sitting on top of our skin. The pigments they used also had a grey undertone to them which is not complimentary to skin tones.

The perfect concealer for us would be a super creamy and hydrating formula, a high amount of pigment concentration, shades that color correct dark areas as well as last all day AND melt into the skin becoming undetectable.
